Passions of the Pueblos

Historic pueblo pottery dates approximately from 1540 - 1880 A.D. and is rarer than the older Prehistoric pottery. It has become extremely valuable over the last few years. Much less of this pottery exists since it was never ceremoniously buried, discarded if broken or cracked, and was produced over a shorter period of time than Prehistoric pottery. Similar to the ancient pottery in appearance, structure and design patterns, it differs in that it includes new imagery. Bird and feather motifs (influenced by the introduction of parrots from Mexico), cloud designs, terraces and pueblo religious iconography appear in Historic pueblo pottery. New motifs influenced by 19th century Hispanic imagery and European bird and floral designs distinguish this pottery from earlier pottery. What was most exciting in the development of this pottery was the advent of polychromatic pieces, using more than two colors. Historic pueblo pottery is often referred to as "the more beautiful" pottery and is collected worldwide.
